Interlude

The prominent losses that we have all suffered through this past year was an involuntary extraction of human connection in our daily lives. Connecting with other people is a core psychological need, and one of the most rewarding experiences we can have. This forced isolation has had an immense effect on both our social and interpersonal relationships and has shifted the way we interact with one another. While this is a shared experience to some extent, each one of us has a unique story to tell about what this past year has done to our ability to connect. This book explores a series of individuals and their relationships at a deeper level.

Fend Wellness is an in-house venture start-up in the health and wellness space. While living through the height of a global pandemic that is easily transmitted, there was a huge gap in the industry for wipes you can wear - to protect your hands and surfaces from pesky germs. As the lead designer on this project, I focused on activated the brand identity, packaging, web design, and advertising that would give us our unique white space in this industry. Live Large, Stay Safe with Fend Wellness. 

The brand is scheduled to launch in March and already has potential partnerships lined up with major companies in the travel, hospitality, and corporate spaces.

Research, Interviewing & Collection

A major component of this project has been researching and compiling stories, media, and quotes. I spent over a month alone interviewing and sending out dozens of surveys and questionnaires for people who had shown interest in the project. To reach a wider audience, I reached out on all the platforms I could think of - Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, even Tiktok. After getting a decent chunk of feedback, I spent my time carefully analyzing and proofing the stories that had been sent in. I have a genuine love for human connection & psychology, as well as enjoy researching and compiling data, so this was one of my favorite steps of the process.

Content Layout

The book is comprised of 4 main chapters; the Onset, the Interim, the Relapse, and the Come Up. Each chapter goes over and highlights a certain chunk of time during the pandemic that has unique identifiable qualities. I wanted to give this book a standard book structure, but with so many moving parts, finding the right way to sort it was a bit of a mess. Breaking the stories up in sections was the perfect fit, as it allowed me to highlight key statistics about a timeframe, allowed the stories to be read in chronological order, and gives a better general snapshot of this time.

The Onset

The first chapter of Interlude, "The Onset", talks about the early months of the pandemic and the unloading of this virus on our society in the beginning. This section is one of my favorites, because not only are the stories so raw and full of emotions, but this was such a pivotal point in so many individuals' lives, that it will live on as a good reminder of how things started. Every section has a 'featured story' that is the most robust and emotional, and in this section that story is "Losing Lulu".

The Interiem

The second chapter of this book is all about the Summer months when we became better adjusted to our situation and found new ways to adapt. The stories in this chapter focus a lot on positive outcomes and people who took advantage of this unique moment in their lives.

The Relapse

The third chapter of the book focuses on the struggles of many individuals during the fall months, and also focuses a lot on mental health. While these are in chronological order, I still made conscious decisions on what each chapter will talk about, to give it a more consistant storyline.

The Come Up

The fourth and final chapter of this book focuses on the present and future of our society. While we are slowly settling back into a new normal, how we come out of this will be forever changed. Once all of the stories are done, I wrapped the section up with another Q&A about how we will talk about this 20 years from now. Finally, I end it on a thank you and credits page to mention all participants.
